Grateful Jackson fans moved by memorial service Date: 07-07-2009
Fans who were lucky enough to score tickets to Michael Jackson's memorial service Tuesday knew they were witnessing history. "It was amazing," said 35-year-old Gregory Vernon, who wore sunglasses as he walked solemnly out of Staples Center after the service. "We'll probably never see anything like it again." Two stay-at-home moms from Arizona left their kids with their husbands and caught a last-minute flight to attend the memorial. "Love him or hate him, this is the experience of a lifetime," said 38-year-old Carly Stoltenberg of Gilbert, Ariz. "This brought back his humanness." Her friend Katey McPhearson said the service, like the man it memorialized, "totally transcended all races, all cultures, all ages."

Australian scientists have developed a "trojan horse" therapy to combat cancer, using a bacterially-derived nano cell to penetrate and disarm the cancer cell before a second nano cell kills it with chemotherapy drugs. The "trojan horse" therapy has the potential to directly target cancer cells with chemotherapy, rather than the current treatment that sees chemotherapy drugs injected into a cancer patient and attacking both cancer and healthy cells. Sydney scientists Dr Jennifer MacDiarmid and Dr Himanshu Brahmbhatt, who formed EnGenelC Pty Ltd in 2001, said they had achieved 100 percent survival in mice with human cancer cells by using the "trojan horse" therapy in the past two years. The scientists plan to start human clinical trials in the coming months. Human trials of the cell delivery system will start next week at the Peter MacCullum Cancer Center at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Austin at the University of Melbourne.

On its final working day in office, the Bush administration re-designated eight countries as severe violators of religious freedom but waived possible sanctions against Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan, officials said Monday.
